Bill W's Notes for 5/30

Hello, my name is Bill Wright and we'll have notes for tonight's opener for the Avanti Windows & Doors Corn Belt Clash featuring the Amsoil USAC National Sprint Cars and the Championship Series 360's.

There are 31 USAC Sprint Cars assembled and 45 360's! Many of our 410 regulars are racing in the 360 class. It's the best of both worlds at the "Sprint Car Capital of the World" as you get to see Non-wing and winged sprints go at it in beautiful Iowa weather!

It's also induction weekend for the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame, so past inductees like Johnny Rutherford, Jimmy Sills, Shane Carson, Ron Shaver, Alan Kreitzer, Tommy Sanders, Steve Beitler, Doug Clark, Pat Sullivan, Dave Argabright, Shirley Kear, Davey Brown Sr., Jon Stanbrough and others are here in the house, and Terry McCarl is racing.

Also, new inductees Damion Gardner, Todd Shaffer, Steve Sinclair, Don Ott, and Craig Dollansky are here this weekend to celebrate with their family and friends.

Hot laps are scheduled for 6:30 p.m. USAC will be first up...

USAC Qualifying is up first....

AJ Johnson gets upside down in time trials. He is o.k....

CJ Leary has set quick time and a new track record here early in time trials at 18.442 seconds....

Vinny Ward has some difficulties over the inside berm...he will retry at qualifying...

Nick Marts is into the wall after his second lap, he is ok....

Leary is able to hold on and sets the new track record at 18.442 seconds, breaking Kevin Thomas Jr.'s mark in 2017...Brady Bacon is second quick, followed by RJ Johnson, Kevin Thomas Jr. and Briggs Danner...

360 hot laps and then...

360 Qualifying is up next, 2 laps on the clock, 200 pts towards tonight's feature lineup for quick time, 198 pts for 2nd quick, 194 pts for 3rd quick and so on....

2 groups of qualifying, Group 1 will make up heats 1 and 2....

Carson McCarl is quickest in the first group with a 15.941, followed by Tasker Phillips, Timothy Smith, Terry McCarl and Austin McCarl...

2nd group up now...

Ryan Timms is quickest in the second group at 15.765 seconds, followed by Kerry Madsen, Cam Martin, Emerson Axsom and Ryan Giles...

USAC Heats

Heats are 8 laps, the top five transfer to the feature...

Heat one

Drake leasd Grant Leary, Sussex and Danner on lap one...Danner by Sussex for 4th...and Seavey is by Sussex for the final transfer with 5 to go...Leary is under Grant for 2nd at the halfway point...Grant still battling on the cushion and he's back by Leary for 2nd nd reeling in the leader...Grant to the lead with two to go on the high side...Grant will win this one...

Heat two

Cromwell is in the work area...shock is off, he will replace in the work area...DAvis is out front early, ahead of Ballou, Stockon, Bacon and Bernal...Ballou now slides into the lead on lap two...Stockon now by Davis for seond, and Bacon follows him into 3rd...now Bernal is up to 4th and Davis is trying to hold onto the final transfer over Simpson...Bernal now by Stockon for 3rd...Simpson reeling in Davis for the final transfer....Ballou will win this one with a rim rider...Davis will hold onto the final transfer....

Heat three

Marts will not start...Rogers leads lap one over Burks, Swanson, Roell and Cummins...Roell flips hard two laps in...Kayla is climbing out of the car...6 to go, Rogers leads Burks, Swanson, Cummins, RJ Johnson and Saville...Burks is out...Cummins will win it over Swanson, RJ Johnson, Rogers and Saville...

Heat four

Garrett leads Renbold, AJ Johnson, Calderwood and KTJ...Calderwood up to 3rd...KTJ into 4th...AJ Johnson on the buble...KTJ back by Calderwood for 3rd....MOles now by Calderwood for the fifth and by AJ Johnson now into 4th...Johnson on the buble with Calderwood 6th...KTJ ducks under REinbold for 2nd now...Moles is by his teammate for 3rd...Garrett will win this one....battle for the final trnasfer...Calderwood has it at the white, and hel'll hold onto it...

36j0 heats are 7 laps, 100 pts towards tonight's feature lineup for the win, 97 pts for 2nd, 94 pts for 3rd and so on...

Heat one

HIll leads early over Ch Martin, A McCarl, C McCarl and Leavitt...T Smith now shoots under Leavitt for 5th...Leavitt and T Smith a good battle for 5th...Hill will win it...

Heat two

Goodno leads Ball, Juhl, Tasker and TMEZ...Tasker by Juhl for 3rd...Garner and TMAC back in 6th and 7th...Tasker now by Ball for 2nd...TMAC now reeling in TMEZ for 5th...Goodno wins it...

Heat three

J Anderson leads PPM, Giles, Timms and Rost...Cam Martin now flies by Rost for 5th...PPM pressuring Anderson for the lead...J Anderson wins it...

Heat four

Groenendyk leads early over Hickle, Winters, Madsen and Sawyer...Axsome now moves from 6th to 4th...Winters is by Sawyer for 5th....Potter is upside dwon in turn four, he is ok...Valentine will be black flagged for not stopping on the red...Groenendyk leads Hickle, Madsen, Axsom, Winters, Higday, Sawyer, Weldon, and Ai Zoutte...Madsen is quickly into 2nd on the restart...Madsen with a pass on the last lap for the win...

USAC B main is next, 10 laps, top 4 to the A...

Roell starts at the tail as she has taken a back-up car to the track after her heat crash...AJ Johnson will not start...Burks leads Sussex, Setser, Simpson and Ward...Woods is 5th and trying to reel in Simpson...caution for Ward, who gets in the wal lin turn four...white, checker finsih, Burks leads Sussex, Seltser, Simpson, Woods, Cromwell, Graves and Roell...Burks, Sussex, Setser and Simpson move on...

360 B main one, 10 laps, top two to the feature...

Leavitt leads Cl Garner, TMEZ and Mueller...Bickett up to 4th...Cl Garner reeling in the leader...Cl Garner side by side with Leavitt , and leads coming to the white...Cl Garner and Leavitt move on...

B main two...

Potter will not start...Sawyer leads Winters, Higday, Wolfe and Vande Voort...Higday has the low side going and gets by Winters for the second and final transfer with 7 to go...Sawyer and Higday will move on....

USAC A main....25 laps, $9,000 to win...

Stockon leads Bacon, Danner, KTJ and RJ Johnson...RJ Johnson by RTJ for 4th....KTJ back by RJ Johnson on the high side for 4th on lap 7...Ballou into the top 5 on lap 9...Lapped traffic on lap 13...The lead three are nose to tail...Danner high around Bacon for 2nd on lap 17....Bacon back by Danner in close racing on the low side on lap 19...Bacon takes the lead from Stockon with a slider in turn four with four to go...Danner to 2nd on lap 22...Caution for debris on lap 23...Green, white, checker finish...Bacon leads Danner, Stockon, KTJ, Ballou and Grant....Bacon leads the last two to win it!

360 A Main, 18 laps, $2,000 to win...invert is 4...

Timms has the lead over Madsen, C McCarl, A McCalr and Tasker...A McCarl under C McCarl for third on lap three...A McCarl uses the low side of two to pass Madsen for 2nd...A McCarl makes a bid for the lead at the halfway point...C McCarl passes Madsen for third on lap 11...Timms blasts to his first 360 win here, and third overall this year!
