AUTHOR JOHN HAVICK TO SPEAK ON HIS NEW BOOK “THE GHOSTS OF NASCAR: THE HARLAN BOYS & THE FIRST DAYTONA 500” ON FRIDAY AT MUSEUM

ention to the stock car world during the Lucas Oil Late Model Knoxville Nationals. This year it is September 26-27-28 and the non-profit museum is excited to host a first-time event this Friday at 2 p.m.: author John Havick of Stone Mountain, Georgia, will be discussing his latest book, “The Ghosts of NASCAR: The Harlan Boys and the First Daytona 500.”

This University of Iowa Press-published book recounts old-model stock car racing in southwest Iowa, International Motor Contest Association (IMCA) racing in the 1950’s, and then some National Association of Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR) races, including the inaugural Daytona 500 in 1959. The main characters are mechanic Dale Swanson and champion drivers Johnny Beauchamp and DeWayne “Tiny” Lund.

According to museum curator Tom Schmeh, “This is a real honor for us to host author John Havick this Friday afternoon. He will be speaking in the theater on the second floor of our museum at 2 p.m. and then he will be selling and signing his book afterwards. This is a unique opportunity to meet John and pick up your copy of his latest effort. We are also proud that it is published locally by the University of Iowa Press.”

Those seeking more information on the September 26-28 events are encouraged to visit the www.sprintcarhof.com web site.
