Derek plans on racing part-time in the 2009 season in the Knoxville 410 class. Derek began racing sprint cars in Washington state in 1993, sharing a ride with Travis Cram under the toutelage of Travis' uncle, Fred Brownfield. After taking some time off to have children, Derek has been back racing since 2004 with Grays Harbor Raceway as his home track in the 360 class. Derek competed hard in 2007 at his home track as well as the Northwest Sprint Challenge Series (NSCS), which has become the ASCS NW regional series. He also made his first trip to Knoxville Raceway to compete in the 360 Nationals as well as the Brodix Tournament of Champions that season.
