Welcome everyone to the final night of the 8th annual Lucas Oil Late Model Knoxville Nationals. Last night the internet went down just after the completion of the first heat. It never came back. We apologize for that but say in the same breath that there was nothing we could do (other than throw my lap top off the back of this giant grandstand…..which I nearly did!)
The weather has been perfect all week if not a bit cool at night. Today was yet another beautiful day here in central Iowa. Now the sun is sinking in the west and the cars from the companion modified program are warming up on the track and working in this big half-mile dirt oval.
This is Bob Wilson again along with Bill Wright and we hope to give you lineups, comments and finishes as they happen. Next year, why not make the trek to Iowa (and Knoxville in particular) to witness this great event. I’ve seen them all and they’ve all been duzies.

25 laps Wanniger has the early lead but on the bottom is Long who won his heat going away. Lap two is still Wanninger. Behind him is Auringer and Long with Snyder in fourth.....Yellow flag.....it is for Long who has come to a rest in turn one. A wrecker is heading his way. Top 5 look this way: Wanninger, Auringer, Snyder, Gilman and Dailey. Top five after 5 laps; Wanninger, Auringer, Snyder, Dailey, and Gustin. Wanninger and Auringer have pulled away from their followers. All the top cars are running up on Knoxville's big cushion. Ten laps in the books and Waqnninger still leads by about 8 car lengths. The second 5 are: Van Genderen, Gilman, Foster, Murray, Abelson. Looks like Shute has big problems as he pulls in with smoke billowing from the back of his car. fter 15 laps: Wanninger, Snyder, Auringer, Dailey, Gustin, Van Genderen, Foster, Murrayh, Abelson, Gilman. Wanninger and Snyder are running nose to tail. Snyder dives to the bottom in 1 and 2 but it has no advantage. Snyder looks to be faster but cannot get around .....but he takes the lead coming out of turn four on lap 22.....Yellow! Two cars sspun in turn four and both were able to make it to the pits. Gilman and Mullen are the two cars in this incident. Snyder maintains his lead on the restart as he pulls away. Snyder wins it!

Earl Pearson, Jr., Brad Neat and Ray Cook have been added to the field as provisionals. The cars are being lined up on the front stretch for driver introductions. Introductions are over and the pace truck is ready to take off. Hubbardhas the lead down the backstretch and comes across the line in first....birhofer trails the Bloomquist and Lanigan. Hubbard has pulled away from Birkhofer. Top five: Hubbard, Birkhofer, Bloomquist, Lanigan, O'Neal after 6 laps. Owens is 6th. Lap seven and Hubbard heads into traffic. Hubbard is content to run the top while Birkhofer and Bloomquist are on the bottom. Hubbard is having problems in heavy traqffic and Birkhofer has caught him. Now Bloomquist has caught Birkhofer. Bloomquist puts his nose under Birkhofer as O'Neal comes flying into the fray.....and looks like the fastes car in this top group. O'Neal has overtaken Bloomquist and is now after Birkhofer. O'Neal takes second running down the backstretch of lap 18. Top three are still close together as Bloomquist has slipped. They run almost nose to tail in the corners. O' Neal slides Hubbard in turn two of lap 23. O'Neal takes the lead on lap 24. First caution is thrown for Simpson as several cars are now in the pits with oportunity. Restart shows top five as O'Neal, Hubbard, Bkirkhofer, Owens and Mars....from 26th!! Mars now takes third! He is running the top portion of the track. Yellow for Simpson spin on the backstretch and he ended up coming to the pits. 29 laps down: O'Neal, Hubbard, Mars, Owens, Birkhofer, Lanigan, Bloomquist, Marlar, Moyer, Francis, Vought, McCreadie, Landers, REddick and Smith. Best race at the front is Birkhofer and Owens for fourth place.....yellow flag again....looks like James and Landers but don't quote me on that as the crews are surrounding the cars running 12th. Pearson is back out on the track.making it difficult to see. Rauen is also in the pits....James heads back out on the track was running 17th and Landers was 12th....31 laps down. On this restart Birkhofer and Mars are battleing for third and Hubbard stays right on O'Neal's tail. Birkhofer has slipped and now battles Owens.....4th yellow for Shirley who was running 16th as he and Rauen are both in the pits. Both cars return to the field. 36 laps down....yellow for Lanigan who has struck the turn two fence....grazing the right side of his car but he has reappeared on the track after a brief visit to the infield....he'll report to the tail, he was running 8th at the time. Owens takes fourth on the restart. Moyer has made some movement as he is currently in 7th and charging. O'Neal, Hubbard and Mars have pulled..... yellow caution #6 as Marlar brings it out....Lanigan, WElls and Rauen also use the time to come in to the work area to have things checked. Landers comes in late and goes back out, 41 down...Birkhofer on the bottom has claimed third....as Smith now runs 6th....Bloomquist slows on the backstretch while running 8th and comes to the pit area....45 laps down...Rauen, Lanigan, McCreadie and Marlar have also come pitside. Bloomquist has replaced a right rear and is back out at the tail. Rauen does not make it back out On restart Owens slides to third and Birkhofer takes fourth....now Mars takes the spot back. Top 10: O'Neal, Hubbard, Owens, Mars, Birkhofer, Francis, Harris, Moyer, Smith, McCool at the 1/2 way mark. O'Neal is pulling away ....McCreadie comes in and calls it quits.O'Neal is edging into sap traffic as Owens, Hubbard and Mars trail on the high cushion. Owens is reeling in the leader and a blanket finish at the flag stand. Owens now takes the lead on lap 60! Now, Owens is pulling away in traffic....but O'Neal is making a race of it but he falters in turn 4 of lap 64 after jumping the cushion. Owens now has an open track while O'Neal is mired in lap traffic. Owens has nearly a straight away lead on this big half mile. Here's your top 10: Owens, O'Neal, Mars, Hubbard, Birkhofer, Francis, Harris, Moyer, Reddick, Feger after 71 laps. Owens is ready to lap Mars is third and is still on O'Neal's back bumper....Hubbard gets by O'Neal tosecond. Hubbard is just 3.3 seconds behind Owens. Hubbard has started experinenceing handling problems and lost the second spot to O'Neal. Owens is still leading and has more than a chute lead. Fourth running Mars has come to a halt in turn two bringing out the yellow....he was running in the fourth spot on lap 88. Top 15: Owens, O'Neal, Hubbard, Francis, Birkhofer (these guys are on the lead lap) one lap down are Harris, Moyer, Reddick, Fegers, Landers, Smith, Bloomquist, McCool, Shirley and on lap 86 is Heckenast. The tow hook is on the Mars machine as he rides to the pit area. 12 laps to goBirkhofer move to secon using the bottom but Owens prevails in the lead but O'Neal takes the 2nd spot back. Nine to goe and Owens is again pulling away. 7th running Harris has come to a stop on lap 92 bringing out the yellow. Top 10: Owens, O'Neal, Birkhofer, Francis, Moyer, ZHubbard, Reddick, McCool, Feger, Smnith. Only 7 cars on the lead lap.Owens again puylls away on this....Ownens had slowed and O'Neal passed him but a yellow for track debris negated the move. Oh Man! it is so close on this restart!...Redick has moved to fifth.....Owens again slows and O'Neal take the lead! White flag and O'Neal is going to win this one!
