Kay and VanDerWal Win at Inauguaral Dynamic Drivelines Dirt Duel!

On a very hot and humid night at the Knoxville Raceway the IMCA Modifieds pounded the historic black zook clay in the inaugural running of the Hawkeye Dirt Tour, Dynamic Drivelines Dirt Duel! 44 Modifieds and 51 SportMods entered on this night.
In the IMCA Modified class it was Justin Kay of Wheatland, Iowa taking the $1,500 winner’s prize after a late race duel with Chris Abelson. Kay was out to a three second lead at one point but Abelson was able to catch Kay just before a late race caution. Abelson took the lead on lap 21 briefly but Kay was able to drive back around on the next lap and then pull away to win the 25 lap event. Abelson finished second and Jacob Murray grabbed the third spot on the podium. The Modified event held five heat races with only the top two transferring the A Main while the rest of the field was split into three B Mains where the top four of each of those transferred to the A Main.
The 20 lap $1,000 to win IMCA SportMod feature was also a great race. Brett Lowry jumped out to the early lead but on lap eight Tim Plummer drove around and took control. Meanwhile Curtis VanDerWal of Oskaloosa, who started eighth, was passing cars on the high side and was able to climb to third place quickly. At halfway VanDerWal was in second and challenging Plummer for the lead. Finally on lap 15 VanDerWal was able to use lapped traffic to his advantage and drove by Plummer to take the lead and drive away. Plummer held second and Lowry third. The SportMods program consisted of six heat races and three B Mains.
Join us on Saturday night for 3M Night the Lucas Oil Knoxville Championship Cup Series sprint cars with the National Sprint League. All three classes of sprint cars will be in action. Kids ages 12 and under are free admission and there will be a candy dash on the front stretch thanks to Casey’s General Store!
